Project-Based Learning
What is PBL?
Project-Based Learning (PBL) is an educational approach that centers around real-world learning. Students are tasked with solving real-world problems through different, interdisciplinary hands-on projects.
To start, let’s look at how project-based learning stacks up agains traditional projects…
See PBL in action…
Projects That Work: Mission to Mars
AP Physics, 9-12th grade
Physics students assume the role of aerospace engineers to explore the real-world problem of how to land a rover on Mars.
March Through Nashville
Humanities, 6th grade
Students turn into historians to create a virtual civil rights museum app, focusing on the events in Nashville, Tennessee.
X, Y Marks the Spot
Math, 7th grade
An NPR article on geocaching inspired this math project. Individual locations served as the coordinates; routes from one place to another were defined by linear equations.
Why PBL?
We live in a world that is project-based.
Our students deserve an education that prepares them to be successful in the real-world. By being immersed in project-based learning in school, students develop the skills that will allow them to be successful in the world they will enter after graduation.
Some things to consider:
EQUITY: Research shows that project-based learning is beneficial for students who have historically been furthest away from educational opportunities.
SUCCESS SKILLS: PBL develops and nurtures skills that are not traditionally valued in a test driven education system. Skills that we know are important for success in the real-world, such as public-speaking, technology, and collaboration are purposefully taught & developed.
ENGAGEMENT: The most asked question from students, “When will I need this?” disappears. PBL facilitates learning alongside real-world, authentic projects that are important to kids and their community. Kids know why they are learning different skills and then immediately apply them for impact.

Project-Based Learning Research Review
“…PBL increases long-term retention of content, helps students perform as well as or better than traditional learners in high-stakes tests, improves problem-solving and collaboration skills, and improves students’ attitudes toward learning

Impact of PBL on Student Achievement
“Researchers in Michigan show that project-based learning in high-poverty communities can produce statistically significant gains in social studies and informational reading.”

PBL Has Positive Impact on Students Learning Science and Math
“MIDA Learning Technologies compared elementary classes who were piloting PBL against classes that were continuing to use the district’s traditional curriculum.”
